The Schools The UK Team
The SJLHS Kenya Exchange was started in 1991 by Don Moxon, then Head of RE at Sir John Leman High School, and who had lived and taught in Kenya. He organised a party of students to visit the Alliance Boys and Girls High Schools near Nairobi, and the Port Reitz Special School in Mombasa. They stayed at the Alliance schools for a time, and then at the YMCA just outside Mombasa. All the schools took part in a full programme of activities arranged by their hosts. The following year a party of students and staff from the Kenyan schools visited us in Beccles, and were hosted by the students, parents and staff here. A full programme of educational and other activities was laid on for them. This Exchange was largely funded by the students themselves, who raised most of the money, with assistance from outside bodies such as the Commonwealth Youth Exchange.
The 2010 - 2012 Exchange
'Social equality through education'
We are now undertaking fundraising for the 2010-2012 exchange and will take a party of 15 students from Sir John Leman High School to visit the Alliance schools for 1 week in July 2011. This will be followed by 2 weeks working with the Alliance pupils on improvement projects at the Port Reitz school for the physically disabled.
When we return from our trip we will begin fundraising to host and provide a programme for the pupils from the Alliance schools in the UK. We will be dividing the funds raised in 2012 between the programme for the Alliance pupils and the sponsorship of at least one Port Reitz pupil to further their education. Please see About for more information on the current exchange.
